IRC is short for Internet Relay Chat, although IRC & newsgroups have things in common such as the ability to talk to others & download files. Everything on IRC is live & not static like on newsgroups.
IRC Pros: Because everything on IRC is live, you download files directly from the group or person hosting the channel. Most channels are hosted buy well known & reputable groups. There is no provider like on newsgroups, so there are no bad uploads, unless the original file is bad. If you post a question it can be answered immediately.
IRC Cons: IRC is a bit more difficult to jump into & get started. Because there are many people trying to download the same file you may be put on a download list, first come first serve. If you're one of those who can't fallow simple rules, The moderator of the channel will kick you out or ban you entirely.
